Firefighters swiftly knocked down a large brush fire in East Dedham this afternoon in a wooded area past the end of Harding Terrace. There were several homes close to the site of the conflagration.
Landon Fenore, 11, Dylan Challis, 12, and James Dalton, 14, were in the area when they saw the flames. They say they saw another teenager wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt running from the area. They attempted to put out the flames, but when they were unsuccessful they ran to a nearby home to call the Fire Department.
Engine 3 was returning from a medical call on Veterans Road when the fire was called in.They were able to see the smoke and responded. The company, led by Lt. Steve Lynch, quickly had the fire under control.
After the fire was extinguished the three boys who first reported it came back up the hill to survey the damage. The fire company took the opportunity to instruct the youth, all of whom attend the Middle School, on the dangers a fire presents.Lynch asked the boys to consider the possibility that something could happen to a family member while they were busy putting out the flames.
“We did a little public service today,” Lynch said.“We put out a fire and educated some kids.”
